Chapter Twelve

“Mom, I saw a huge bird,” Jason announces from the bow extension. He joins Laura in the cockpit. “It didn’t look at all like a Legge’s hawk-eagle. That’s the only kind of eagle that lives in this region.”

Laura felt Paul watching them. She willed herself not to turn and reveal his location to Jason. “Maybe you discovered a new species.”

“In the Atlantis Codes game, people could turn into birds. It would be so cool if I could turn into a bird in real life,” Jason says.

“Yeah, it’s too bad games aren’t like real life.” Laura wonders how much of Jason’s game will show up in their real life now. She doesn’t want to know.

Jason returns to the bow extension, searching the treetops with his binoculars. Laura checks on the yacht. Still no signs of life. But her clairsentience gives her a new clue. Ellen? Her mind races. Laura hasn’t seen or heard from her sister since their family visit to Iceland over five years ago. How on Earth could Ellen be on that yacht?

Paul paces in circles around the clearing as Leucosia’s question echoes in his mind. What will you do to protect us? A war of emotion rages in his belly. Leucosia tries a new tactic.

At an eye signal from Leucosia, Narmaya intercepts him. “I will have your child.”

“Excuse me?” Paul was not expecting her declaration. The original sirens gather around along with Leucosia, Lorelei, and Jiao to hear more.

“I am pregnant,” Narmaya says. “Your seed impregnated me.”

The hybrid sisters maintaining the protective shield leave their stations and all seven of them gather around Paul. They all want to have his child. The originals join them, curious to learn more about their children’s new sibling.

Leucosia scowls. She thought her pregnancy would push him over the edge to fulfill his duty. “Now is not the time!” The originals return to their group cuddle, and the seven sisters return to their posts. “Sister Lorelei and Sister Jalpari, remain with us.”

Lorelei and Narmaya respond to Leucosia’s disapproving eyes with defiant postures. “This lack of discipline places us at risk.”

“Do not look at me,” Lorelei says. “I did not fuck him.”

Leucosia gets in her face. “You are the elder of the seven sisters. They still follow your example from times past.”

The two sirens take a fighting stance. Paul intervenes. “Ladies, please.”

Leucosia slaps him. “Your selfish actions endanger us!”

Paul looks over Narmaya’s body head to toe: her radiant presence and glowing skin, her inviting body posture, and the lascivious look in her eyes. “How am I supposed to say no to that?”

“You said no many times before.” Leucosia breathes away another surge of rage. His defiance and disobedience offends her to the core. She attributes it to his human nature. A true Sirenian male would not hesitate to follow her commands.

Lorelei also regains her composure. “With all due respect, my queen, it is Jalpari’s destiny to carry Paul’s child. I have foretold it.” She extends her hands to Leucosia. “We need to focus on the imminent threat.
